Tunnel lighting

Lighting in tunnels requires a very specifically designed luminaire to endure the conditions of the environment. Luminaires used to illuminate tunnels must be able to withstand high levels of vibration caused by the trains over the life of the luminaire. Maintaining a high level of uniformity is important when lighting tunnels as it aids the adaptation of the eye when transitioning between tunnels and platforms.

Train operators must be able to clearly see all signals and not have any difficulty in determining the signals they are seeing. As a result of this, colour rendition is also an important factor when lighting tunnels.

In the event of an evacuation of the train in the tunnel, the lighting must be of a suitable level for the passengers to safely navigate their way to a safe location.
